Consumer Services

DHHC's Consumer Services are designed to promote independent living, whether a person was born Deaf or has become Deaf or Hard of Hearing as a result of injury, illness, or old age. Families are welcome to participate.

Consumer services include:
  • Training in independent living skills:
    • Nutrition/cooking
    • Money Management
    • Health Education
    • Community Resources
    • Transportation
    • Home management
    • Sex education
  • Vocational skills and counseling:
    • Awareness of the world of work
    • Developing a resume
    • Interviewing skills
    • Work ethics
    • Job search assistance
    • Assistance on the job sites
    • Assessment of work performance
    • Job accommodation
  • Communication skills:
    • Aspects of sign language system
    • Use of interpreter services
    • Basic writing and reading skills
    • Information about hearing loss
    • Using assistive devices
    • American Sign Language classes and tutoring
  • Peer counseling
  • Information and referral:
    • Your rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
    • Availability of community resources
